Leonard Galmon

NOCP Student Leonard Galmon Accepted to Yale University

Leonard sent us this self-described "airport selfie" as he was traveling to Washington D.C. for three days of interviews as a finalist in the prestigious Ron Brown Scholars Program.

He called us from the airport because he wanted us to know... he had just learned that his application to Yale University was accepted!

An Outpouring of Support for our Scholars

Since the story about NOCP Scholar Leonard Galmon ran in the Times-Picayune, many in our community have reached out to support his journey! We are so grateful for the outpouring of support for Leonard Galmon we have witnessed following the article about his life and education that ran in Sunday's Times-Picayune. 100% Accepted to College!

We are so proud of our Class of 2014!

On Thursday, May 22 at 6:00, our founding class graduated at Tulane University's McAlister Auditorium.  This joyous celebration was made even more special because of the bright futures ahead of our proud graduates.  100% have been accepted to college, and together, they have earned over $2.1 million in combined merit-based scholarship offers.

Our Yale-Bound Scholar!

The Cohen College Prep counselors had him apply to top schools, schools he'd never imagined: Wesleyan, Brown. Yale chose him, and he chose Yale. "That's crazy. I was in denial -- I couldn't believe it at first," he said. Above that, he was one of only 26 of 5,500 applicants to win a Ron Brown Scholarship, which provides extra money plus support to keep promising future black leaders on track.

NOCP CEO Ben Kleban lauds the hard work of the students and recognizes their success as a symbol of the transformation occurring in New Orleans public education. “The first graduating class of New Orleans College Prep’s school network is making our community proud of their resilience and achievement," Kleban said. "Pre-Katrina, only 30 percent of New Orleans public high school graduates attended college. The life paths of 55 children have been transformed for the better.”
