Our Academic Approach

New Orleans College Prep offers a rigorous, PreK - 12th grade curriculum that has test prep integrated throughout. We offer extra support to our students through tutoring and advisory programs.

We use the standard language of rigor in mathematics - conceptual understanding, procedural skill, fluency and application - as well as our reflections from student data to decide what and how we teach. We teach conceptually through discovery, manipulatives, visuals and hands-on activities. We teach procedures by helping scholars solve problems flexibly, efficiently and appropriately. We ensure scholars apply their learning through instructional tasks and real-world scenarios.

NOCP works to ensure that all scholars are able to (1) think about what they have just read and (2) explain or describe this thinking. To that end, we have created ELA blocks where students practice effective reading and writing habits, ultimately leading to applying those strategies independently.

We strategically utilize data to ensure that all staff and students receive the individualized supports and services they need. Our staff are effective data practitioners who use formative data practices and analysis from Network Learning Days to constantly adapt their instruction to fit our students’ needs.

One way NOCP ensures that our students are college ready is through our ACT aligned curriculum. Beginning in the 2nd grade, NOCP students are exposed to the types of thinking and problem solving skills necessary for success on the ACT. This preparation culminates in High School with a required ACT Prep course for all Juniors, and a Seminar course for all Seniors. We strive for all of our students to score ACT 18 or above.

College Counseling

Our college counseling program is anchored in dual priorities – college access and college persistence – that stem directly from the to-and-through-college nature of our school’s mission.
